SAM, Starter-Alternator-Motor

In 2005-2006, TM4 successfully completed the development of an electric traction motor and controller for a heavy duty vehicle OEM. Located between the internal combustion engine and the transmission, the electric machine acts as a starter, an alternator and a motor (SAM).

Today, 11 of TM4’s SAM systems are being tested in North America and Europe.

Designed for medium and heavy-duty vehicles, the SAM system will safely stop and restart the engine to save fuel and reduce exhaust emissions and noise. At low speed, the powerful electric motor provides sufficient power and torque traction to enable zero emission mode. During sudden acceleration, the system combines the internal combustion engine and TM4’s powerful electric motor. At high speed, electric power can be generated and used to recharge the batteries, when needed.
